Landscapes 09

October 19, 1935 ~ January 30, 2024 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather (aka Poppie). Loved by all. Born in New York City, NY, to Catherine A. Scammell Mehler and William Mehler. Bill graduated from Toms River High School, NJ. He then joined the Marine’s (hoorah) from 1956 until 1959 serving in Paris Island, SC, and in Okinawa, Japan, as a Rifle Sergeant. Shortly after discharge, he attended Pemberton United Methodist Church and met the love of his life, Ruth Mina Mehler (nee Grover). They were engaged in May, married in August, and brought home their first girl, Pam, the following July and then Cindy the following August. In 2 ½ years, they had an instant family. They lived in Toms River, NJ, Beachwood, NJ, and settled in Columbus, NJ. Upon retirement, Bill and Ruth moved to Harrisburg, PA, to live near Pam and her family.

Bill loved the land. He helped with his family’s cranberry bogs and Ruth’s family’s blueberry farm. He grew vegetables including Japanese vegetables that trucked to New York and Philadelphia. Bill grew many beautiful flowers which were his pride and joy, not to mention his tomato plants that grew taller than 6’. He was an amazing gardener and loved the outdoors.

Bill and Ruth owned the Columbus General Store (NJ) throughout the 1970s and 1980s during which Bill also drove a school bus for Northern Burlington HS. He enjoyed bus driving, and he marveled at how he drove to many places, cities, and across states without a GPS. Technology amazed him. Bill also won the NJ bus safety rodeo in 1997 and was 1st runner-up another year whereby he competed in national competitions.

Most notably, Bill loved well and expressed joy and warmth to everyone. He was humble, gentle, and giving. He was creative and loved to do things for others.  He will be greatly missed.

It is so hard to capture Dad’s nature and spirit with words; but when you talk to him, you imagine the joy that God has for His people when we turn to Him to share or seek guidance. It is pure joy. Our parents have created an amazing legacy, and we will trust in our Lord and Savior to guide us and to glorify God. I pray we can share our legacy as Kari Jobe puts it in  “The Blessing.”

“May His favor be upon you.   And a thousand generations   And your family and your children   And their children, and their children”

Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Ruth; older brother Fred; and older sister Penny. He is survived by daughters, Pam Crist of Hummelstown, PA; Cindy (David) Burdine of Double Oak, TX; brother-in-law Herb (Linda) Grover of Pagosa Springs, CO; granddaughter, Lynn (Jason) Fallinger; granddaughter and grandson, Katherine and James Burdine; great-grandson and great-granddaughter, Brady and Bailey Fallinger; many nieces and nephews; and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
