DELANCO – Colonel Robert D. Hinkle, age 92, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was Born in Riverside, NJ on June 12, 1929 to the late Laura and Clarence “Pete” Hinkle. He graduated from Riverside High School in 1947 where he was an avid basketball and baseball player. His first job was with the Riverside Trust Company. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and graduated from the Officer's Candidate School, the Command and General Staff College, the Air War College and was then assigned to the 179th Division in Korea. Later in his military career he served as an instructor as well as Liaison Officer for South Jersey for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He proudly served his country and retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army receiving the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and the Purple Heart. In civilian life Bob worked as a Substation Engineer with Public Service Electric & Gas Company.
He was a member of the Military Officer's Association, the TW Daly Chapter of the Korean Veterans of South Jersey, VFW Post 3020 of Riverside, Riverside American Legion Post 294 and the Masonic Lodge #107. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Burlington County Country Club for 46 years. He loved most sports and enjoyed the strategy of a good chess game. He was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church.
He is predeceased by his sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Murphy and Doris (Beebe) Hellings and his brother, Francis (Pete) Hinkle. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Joan (nee Brown), his daughter Joan Daniels (Frank), grandson, Andrew Daniels, granddaughter, Maria Runyon (CJ) and three great-grandchildren, Nick, Ruby and Charlie.
Family and friends are invited for visitation at the Zion Lutheran Church, Fairview Street and Pavilion Avenue, Riverside, NJ on Wednesday, July 14th from 6pm to 7pm followed by a service at 7pm. Interment will be private at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
