MICHAEL LANG Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Michael Joseph Lang, who died peacefully on August 6, 2025, just five days before his 80th birthday. A proud U.S. Army veteran, retired Philadelphia Police Officer, and devoted family man, Michael lived a life of service, strength, and humor.

Born and raised in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, Michael graduated from Edison High School before serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He went on to join the Philadelphia Police Department, where he found his calling as a K-9 officer and trainer. Two of his proudest moments in uniform were serving as a K-9 handler and helping protect Pope John Paul II during his historic visit to Philadelphia in 1979.

Michael loved his city, especially its sports teams, and was a lifelong Eagles fan. He also had a deep affection for Elvis Presley and a knack for making people laugh. His sharp wit, legendary storytelling, and generous spirit will be remembered by all who knew him

He was married for 57 years to his beloved wife, Elizabeth Lang. Together, they built a strong and loving family that brought him endless pride and joy.

Michael is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and their children: Michael John Lang (wife Lynn Lang), father of Kiersten Parsons (husband Gregory Parsons) and the late Michael Anthony Lang; and Elizabeth Smith (husband Ronald Smith), mother of Alexandria Smith, Isabella McIlvaine (husband Michael McIlvaine), Mikayla Smith, and Leila Smith.

He was a proud great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren, with one more expected in February 2026. Additionally, he was an amazing uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen LaGraff (wife of William LaGraff), and his sister-inlaw, Joanne Musumeci, wife of the late Renard Musumeci. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Louis Lang and Frances Lang, and his brother Charles Lang.
