Karl Michael Caine, age 85, of Southampton, NJ, passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2025, in his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 27, 1940, in Ludwigsburg, Germany, a son of the late Karl and Sophie Hirschner. After Karl Hirschner’s death, Sophie remarried James Caine, Karl’s adoptive father. Karl was preceded in death by his brother Peter.
Karl is survived and deeply missed by his loving wife of 36 years, Diane Caine. He is also survived by Kuni Van Horn, his first wife; two daughters and a son-in-law, Liz Capeles (Lorenzo II) and Susan Caine of Columbus; two stepdaughters, Kristin Schwartz (Robert) of Southampton and Ashley deSwart of Pottstown, PA. Karl will be forever cherished and remembered by his grandchildren, Lorenzo Capeles III (Amanda), Lauren Alicea (Bryan), Noel Capeles (Tom), Priscilla Capeles, Alyssa and Anthony Rittwager (Andie), Hannah and James Schwartz, Adrianna deSwart, great-granddaughter Leah Haines, and great-grandsons Lorenzo and Michael Capeles. He also leaves behind a beloved sister-in-law, Debbie Dubell and late brother-in-law Roger Dubell of Burlington and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A proud veteran, Karl served 24 years in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of 1st Sergeant before his retirement. He served in Vietnam as a medic. While serving his country as a medical specialist, he earned numerous medals of honor.
After retirement from the U.S. military, Karl was employed by the State of New Jersey at New Lisbon Developmental Center where he worked for 24 years, ending his employment there as a unit manager. He was also the past president of the CWA Local 1040. Karl’s years at New Lisbon were filled with special memories and many beloved friendships.
Karl joined the Masonic Lodge in 1980 and was a Brother in the Vincentown Lodge #44. His passions were working in his yard, cooking, and traveling. He was extremely creative and could fix just about anything.
Visitation is from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Lankenau Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Vincentown, NJ. A military burial will follow at 1 P.M. at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, Wrightstown, NJ.
