Jack Maurice Newborn, affectionately known as "G-man" by his Grandchildren, went home to be with his Lord on September 5, 2024, in Voorhees, New Jersey, at the age of 87. Born on September 15, 1936, on Governors Island, Staten Island, New York, Jack led a life marked by dedication to his family, service, and community.
Jack's early education was at Our Lady Help of Christians in Staten Island, followed by Curtis High School. He furthered his studies at Southern Illinois University. His commitment to service was evident as he started his military journey in the United States Army where during a tour in the Republic of Panama he met his beloved Wife Sonia. Then on his return to the USA he continued his service of 27 years in the United States Air Force, where he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. Following his military career, he worked as a United States Postal worker from 1988 until his retirement in 2000.
A man of faith, Jack was a long-time member of Saint Ann Church in Browns Mills. He later joined First Baptist Church in Eastampton NJ where he was a member of the visitation ministry. His personal life was filled with activities that included fishing, bowling, reading, and being a history buff. However, he was most passionate about spending quality time with his family.
Jack is preceded by his wife, Sonia Lopez, his parents Maurice and Thelma Newborn, Brother Ted Newborn and Son-in-Law Kirk Steepy.
Jack is survived by his beloved children daughters: Mariela Velasquez, Carole Newborn Steepy, Jacqueline Newborn, and son Maurice Newborn. Son-in-law, Raymond Velasquez. Daughter-in-law, Debbie Newborn. Grandchildren: Christopher Velasquez , Stephen Velasquez and his spouse Galina, Alex Velasquez , Erica Hartkorn and her spouse Tom Hartkorn, Adam Newborn, Bonnie Newborn, Gabriel Thompson, Celina Thompson, Sonia Thompson, Tracie Thompson and her fiance' Angelo, Veronica Thompson, and Faith Garcia along with her spouse Aaron Garcia; and nine great-grandchildren as well as his sister Jean Benfanti and Brother-in-law Carl, Brother Ed Newborn and partner Ellen. Jack will also be leaving behind nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who he impacted with his kindness and selflessness.
Services to honor Jack's life will be held at The Lankenau Funeral Home, 370 Lakehurst Road, Browns Mills, NJ 08015 on September 13, 2024, Friday morning. The viewing and visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM followed by the service at 12:00 Noon. His final resting place will be at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, Arneytown, N. Hanover Twp., NJ 08562.
