Hannah Broomell Wilson, 100, of Medford Leas NJ died peacefully at her home on May 28,
2022. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Germantown PA, Hannah attended Green Street and
Germantown Friends Schools there, and the George School in Newtown PA. She graduated
from Swarthmore College in 1944 with a major in Biology. She worked in biological labs at
Woods Hole on Cape Cod, and the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.
In June 1948 she married Robert E. Wilson (Bob), an electronics engineer who shared her love
of nature and wilderness adventure. On their own, and then with their three children, they
hiked and backpacked in the Rocky Mountains, Sierras, and Appalachians. In summers they
went wilderness canoeing with friends in the northern USA and Canada. In winters they canoed
the Everglades and Okefenokee.
Hannah loved sports, especially field hockey, tennis, and in later years water volleyball. A team
player, she played to win, earning her water volleyball nickname, ‘Hurricane Hannah’. She was
active in Moorestown and Quakertown Friends Meetings in New Jersey. Always curious, she
was interested in people and how to nurture their talents. When her children were grown, she
became an accomplished weaver and then took up pottery.
She is survived by her 3 children and their spouses, Suzanne Lankenau (Steve), Carol Walz
(Jack), and Jim Wilson (Sally); by her 9 grandchildren Harold Lankenau (Andrea), Eileen Noakes
(Doug), Jeffrey Lankenau (Lindsay), Julie Aspell (Nolan), Beverly Bongiorno (Chuck), Emily
Wilson, David Wilson (Kaitlyn), Briana Defoe and Hannah Wilson, and by her 13 great
grandchildren Gabe, Skye, Doug, Tristan, Logan, Brody, Brielle, Jay, Vivienne, Annie, James,
Benjamin, and Olivia.
In gratitude for their help in enabling her to die peacefully in her own home, the family suggests
that those wishing to make a contribution in Hannah Wilson’s memory do so to Samaritan
Hospice at Samaritan South Jersey Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 71425, Philadelphia, PA 19176. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at 11 am on Saturday June 25, 2022 at Mount Holly Friends Meeting, at the corner of High St. & Garden St., Mt Holly.
