Elizabeth (Betty) Fox, of Delran, age 94 years passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born to Robert Sr. and Bertha Orfe, she was the oldest of five children. She grew up in Riverside, where she met the love of her life, Harry (Sunny) Fox.
After graduating from Riverside High School (rah, rah, rah), she worked several jobs as a bookkeeper. She loved her numbers. She kept a record of every penny she spent for decades.
Sunny and Betty married in 1948 and spent 69 wonderful years together. Once she started a family, her husband and children were her priority - nothing was more important than taking care of them. Throughout her life, she never missed an opportunity to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was our biggest cheerleader, beaming with pride over every accomplishment.
After her children were grown, she worked at St. Peter’s School. Anyone who went to St. Pete’s during her 20+ year tenure remembers “Mrs. Fox” fondly. She was a legend at that school, working as a secretary for multiple principals (among many other jobs). Often people would say, “She took care of me when I got sick” or “She gave me money when I forgot my lunch.”
Betty helped at her church, worked at the VFW, and volunteered as an election worker after retiring from St. Pete’s. She wholeheartedly gave back to her community (and kept tabs on everyone). She seemed to know everyone in town and their life’s story. She also began to travel with Sunny. Sometimes they traveled on their own or with friends and family. There were always tons of pictures and stories to tell.
She would spend summers “down the shore”, where she would walk the dunes, rake the beach, and spray paint everything in sight. If you stood still long enough, you’d get painted too. Many afternoons, you’d find her sitting at the table, picking crab meat for her crab cakes, or in the kitchen, preparing her famous crabs and spaghetti.
She was a whiz at playing cards - no matter what card game or who she played, she always seemed to win. As she got older, she enjoyed going to the casinos, spending hours playing the penny slot machines. It was never about the money; it was about the fun and the company.
Come colder weather, she would focus on her silk and plastic flowers, placing them all over the house. We counted as many as 122 poinsettias one Christmas. Much to Sunny’s chagrin, she also liked candles and would hide air fresheners behind the furniture so he couldn’t find them.
Betty also loved her dogs, having several while raising her children. Later in life, she gained grand-dogs and great-grand-dogs and spoiled them with extra table food. They always knew where to sit when she was around.
Her laugh was contagious, and you knew you got her when the tears ran down her face and the glasses came off. She always had a tissue up her sleeve for those moments.
She will be remembered, not just for her 94 years on this earth, but for the many people she’s loved, guided, and inspired along the way. If you knew Betty, you were truly blessed.
Betty is survived by five children: Pat Pomeranz, Judie (Jerry) Boggs, Linda Joie, Cindy (Donna Zeimer) Fox, and Harry R. (Karen Curran) Fox; five grandchildren: Elliot (Amanda) Pomeranz, Pam (Michael) Nuskey, Kim (Kyle) Pallett, Amanda Boggs, and Christopher Boggs; and two great grandchildren: Riley and Colton Pallett. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends she loved as family.
She was greeted in Heaven by her husband Sunny, her daughter Elizabeth, her sister Barbara, her parents, and so many other family members and friends who were patiently awaiting the day she could join them.
