DAVID WALTERS Obituary

We mourn the passing of David P. Walters, age 76, of Moorestown, NJ, with sorrow and love. David (Dave) passed away peacefully on August 30th, 2024, at home.

Dave was predeceased by his parents, John F. Walters and Helen B. Walters (nee McNamara), as well as his brothers Jack, Donald (Don), Andrew (Andy), and Richard (Rich) Walters.

He is survived by his brother Robert (Bob) Walters, sister Margaret V. Wesolowski (nee Walters), daughter Lori Poinsett, and son-in-law Shawn Poinsett. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, comrades and friends galore!

Dave (aka Reds/Redsy) was born in Mount Holly, NJ, in 1948 and grew up in Moorestown, NJ. Dave graduated from Moorestown High School in 1966 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1966. Dave served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War in 1968-1969 in the 25th Infantry just outside Saigon.

After his tour of duty, Dave began working in the Newspaper industry. He worked at the Philadelphia Bulletin Newspaper until they closed in 1982 as a Forman. After the Bulletin closed, Dave joined the Philadelphia Inquirer until he retired in 2013. Dave enjoyed fishing, reading, listening to music, especially the Moody Blues, woodworking, travel (not flying), and animals, especially birds.

Dave served as a volunteer firefighter in the Moorestown Fire Department for 30 years, and after stepping down as a volunteer firefighter, became a local fire inspector for several more years.

After retiring from the newspaper industry, Dave became active in local Veteran volunteerism. He joined Rolling Thunder Chapter 5 until it closed, then joined Rolling Thunder Chapter 4, where he remained an active member until his passing. Dave would spend many days representing Veteran information at booths and demonstrations to help educate about Agent Orange support groups and available benefits. He was an avid campaigner for the prisoners of war killed in Vietnam (POW-MIA) and bringing the rest of them home to be laid to rest in peace for familial closure. He traveled annually to Washington D.C. with his friends to put wreaths on the graves of fallen veterans.

His friends especially Veteran friends, knew Dave as someone who brought them together, supported them when they were in need, and understood them in ways their civilian world could not. He helped to create a familial brotherhood around him. Most notably, Dave helped to bring together fellow volunteers behind the scenes bringing the Wall That Heals, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., to his hometown in Moorestown, NJ, in 2013. He is loved, and he will be missed by many.
