Pedro Luis Echevarria, 76, pastor, missionary, and retired real estate agent passed away from surgery complications at 12:49 a.m. on April 15, 2016. A resident of Burlington County since 1974, Mr. Echevarria was born in Peñuelas, Puerto Rico on November 19, 1939 to Vincente Echevarria and Rosa Souchet Cruz. Mr. Echevarria was the oldest son of eight children and enjoyed an extended family that included a large number of half-brothers and sisters. Mr. Echevarria served as a drill sergeant in the Army from 1959 to 1967.
In 1966, he married Migda J. Quiñones, a licensed practical nurse, also from Puerto Rico but living in New York at the time they met. They subsequently had two children, Pedro Jr. and Jocelyn.
Mr. Echevarria worked in real estate for a number of years, yet, all who knew him, knew him to be an evangelist at heart. A man of great faith, he firmly believed in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as the only way to gain entrance into Heaven and he boldly witnessed to others about his faith.
He and his wife served as missionaries in Uruguay for several years beginning in 1990.
He served as a pastor and deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in Pemberton and pastored the Spanish congregation since 2005. He was beloved by his congregation which spanned generations and a variety of Spanish cultures.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Migda J. Echevarria, son Pedro L. Echevarria, Jr. and his wife, Laura Henegar Echevarria, daughter Jocelyn Scully (née Echevarria) and her husband, James Scully, and his grandchildren, Cameron Scully, Gabrielle Echevarria, Peter Echevarria, Belicia Scully, and Nathan Echevarria.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lankenau Funeral Homes. A funeral service will take place on Friday, April 22, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 5 Scrapetown Road, Pemberton, with a viewing beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will take place at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery on Province Line Road, Wrightstown.
