U.S. Veteran

Howard R. Cathers Jr. of Browns Mills passed away Friday, May 28, 2010. He was 90.

He was a native of Philadelphia, formerly of Hulmeville, Pa., and Penndel, Pa., and a resident of Browns Mills since 1962.

Howard was the husband of the late Frances.

Mr. Cathers was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served in Okinawa, Japan.

Howard was retired stationary engineer for Buttonwood Hospital and also a retired school bus driver for the Pemberton Township Board of Education.

Howard and his late wife, Frances, were former newspaper carriers for the Burlington County Times and received awards for their punctuality.

He was a member of St. Ann''s Church.

He also was a member of Browns Mills Senior Citizen Club, Browns Mills Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6805 and the Seabees.

Howard was a craftsman and specialized in making miniature furniture for doll houses.

On his 90th birthday, he received a gift to visit the Grand Canyon. He loved to travel. He also liked ships.

He was the beloved father of John "Jack" Cathers of Bowling Green, Ohio, Mary Jane Cathers-Hood and her husband, Dr. Kenneth Hood, Ph.D., of Alexandria, Va., Thomas J. Cathers Sr. and his wife, Cecelia, of Browns Mills, and Richard C. Cathers and his wife, Karen, of East Winsor; grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of 24.

There will be a viewing and visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at The Lankenau Funeral Home, 31 Elizabeth St., Pemberton Borough. The liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann''s Church, 22 A Trenton Road, Browns Mills. Interment with military honors will be in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
