Leonard Gittens Sr., Pemberton, NJ went home to the Lord Thursday July 1, 2021, at Virtua Hospital in Camden, NJ.
He was born and raised in the Republic of Panama where he completed his childhood and secondary education. After finishing high school, Leonard joined the Army and took his training with the 11th ABN Division at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. He served honorably in the US Army for 21 years, with tours of duty throughout the United States. He bravely fought in both Korean and Vietnam Wars. Leonard received many awards during his time in the Army including the Bronze Star (2), The Run Gallantry Cross and Meritorious Medal. After retiring from the military, he furthered his education at Burlington County College and went to work at New Lisbon Developmental Center as a Cottage Training Supervisor for 21 years.
Leonard was a good cook and loved to barbecue. He was known at work as the "Grill Master" at the annual Panamanian Family Cookouts in Lake Valley. He loved sports and grew up playing baseball, softball football and boxing.
He was a member of the local VFW and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Pemberton, NJ.
Leonard is survived by his wife Cynthia, his children Sheila Coleman (Jerry), Pemberton, NJ; Leonard Gittens, Jr., Ft. Washington, MD.; Eduardo Gittens, Hamilton Twp., NJ; Roberto Gittens (Cindy), Mt. Laurel, NJ; and Sharon Mills, Mt. Laurel, NJ; Deron Alford (Miranda), Long Beach ,California. He is also survived by nine grandchildren (Teddy, Iman, Tiffany, Christopher, Gabriela, Mikeala, Jocelyn, Joshua, Tayler), one great grandchild (Kyhree), four sisters, four brothers and many, many friends.
The family of Leonard thanks everyone for the kind expressions of sympathy, prayers and all acts of kindness extended to them during this time of bereavement.
Services will be held Friday July 9th at 11am Calvary Baptist Church, 5 Scrapetown Rd., Pemberton NJ 08068.
