     Oren Manfred Carrol, Jr. (Ret. SMSgt E8) passed away on June 23, 2021 in Pemberton, NJ at the age of 65. Oren was born in Jacksonville, FL on February 11, 1956 to Oren and Dorothy, the second of three children.

Oren is survived by his loving wife of 28 years Marvel Johnene (Hillier) Carrol; two loving sisters, Samantha (Peter) Olsen and Cindy (Thomas) Nyberg. Oren was a proud mentor and exceptional doting father, always just a phone call away for his adoring children: Larry (Emily) Preston, Kylena (Bill) Brown, Kimberly (Heath Elliott) Carrol, and Danielle (Chris Routson) Cratch. Dear sisters-in law Dolly (Louie) Martinez, LeiLani (Steven) Buzinski, Charlotte (Steven) Isbister. Dear brothers-in-law Joseph (Vida) Hillier, Lorne Hillier, George (Nancy) Hillier and Kevin Hillier. Grandchildren Michael, Haleigh and Gemma Preston, Jillian (Zachary) Carpenter, Oliva Brown, Guinevere Unterbrink and Gordon Wayne, Natasha Cratch and Joey Routson. Loving niece and nephews David and Sarah Olsen, Daniel Nyberg along with many others too numerous to list.

Preceded in death by his Father and Mother Oren Manfred Carrol (Ret. Navy) and Dorothy L. (Mohrbacher) Carrol; Father and Mother-in-law Joseph (Ret. Navy) and Marvel (Long) Hillier; sister-in-law Donna Wright; brothers-in-law John Hillier, James Hillier and Michael Hillier.

Oren grew up in Virginia Beach, VA and attended Kellam High School. Oren earned his Bachelor’s degree at SIU and a Master’s degree at Embry Riddle, and joined the United States Air Force on September 24, 1975. He served a total 28 years 8 months and  7 days. Oren was a helicopter crew chief and crossed-trained to become a flight engineer for the C-141. Oren served with 6th AS Bully Beef, the 18th ALS Blue Diamonds among others.

Oren was awarded numerous medals to include Kuwait Liberation Medal, NATO Medal for Yugoslavia, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship, Air Force Overseas Long Tour, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, South West Asia Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal w/1 Bronze Star, Combat Readiness Medal w/1 OLC, Air Force Commendation Medal w/2 OLC, Aerial Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Medal w/2 OLC.

Campaigns included the Gulf War, Iraqi No-Fly Zone Enforcement Operations, First U.S. Intervention in the Somali Civil War, Bosnian War, Intervention in Haiti, Kosovo War, War Against Terrorism, War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War. As Oren liked to say he proudly “stepped foot in 116 counties” in service to The United States of America.

Oren also enthusiastically served in the Boy Scouts Organization for 25 years, serving as Scout Master for Troop 99 at McGuire AFB, having received his Wood Badge Beads in Germany. Oren also served on the Pemberton Borough School Board as well as the Pemberton Borough Planning and Zoning Board. He also served on the Supervisory Committee for NJ Community FCU. Oren was also a Microsoft Certified Engineer helping anyone with their computer problems with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye.

Oren and Marvel enjoyed the West Jersey Ski Club for the last 30 years, also serving as President, Secretary and Treasurer. They enjoyed travelling to such skiing locations as Austria, Montreal, Crested Butte, Sun Valley, Sunday River, and Mt. Stowe where Oren proposed to the love of his life, “Marvelous Marvel”, and spent their honeymoon in Sugar Loaf.

Oren was involved and incredibly supportive within his church community St. Francis of Assisi, serving as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, President of the CAC, and Knights of Columbus where he was a fourth degree Knight and served as Grand Knight many times and his various posts were Secretary, Treasurer and Financial Treasurer.

Oren co-founded the Armed Forces Heritage Museum. He was the First President also serving as Secretary and Treasurer. He was also involved in the local American Legion Post 294, VFW Post 6590 and Moose Lodge No 737.

He was currently working at McGuire AFB as a C-17 Aircrew Training Systems Contracting Officer Representative (C-17 ATS/COR)

Viewing visitation Tuesday, June 29th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm Lankenau Funeral Home at 31 Elizabeth St. Pemberton, NJ.

Funeral Mass Wednesday, June 30th 10am on JBMDL Ft. Dix Chapel, NJ.

Interment Tuesday, July 6th 2:30pm Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery at 350 Province Line Rd. Wrightstown, NJ.
