JAMES MERTZ Obituary

     James Allan Mertz, age 76 of Brick NJ died after a long illness on April 22, 2024.

     He leaves behind his fiancée, companion, and the love of his life and Joanne Southworth and the Southworth family. James was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Doris and brother Robert. Other loving family members include his cousins Cathy Baumann Finkel and Barbara Baumann Kennedy. He was predeceased by his uncle, Charles Baumann, and cousin Charlie Baumann. Jim was content in life, especially if he had his computer, tennis & and football on the television.     

     Mr. Mertz held a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (1971) from the New Jersey Institute of Technology - Newark College of Engineering and a Masters in Computer Science - 1978 from the University of Colorado. Jim had 13 peer reviewed publications, including a journal cover in the JAOA and held 5 U.S. Patents. He held a NJIT Students Honor Letter for Excellence in education, research, and teaching. He spent his time between professional positions in industry, teaching at major universities, and working on scientific and engineering projects in conjunction with several universities, the federal government, and various corporations. Early positions included a research engineer, system design for ARPANET which were classified projects, U.S. Army electronics, and Digital Equipment Corporation. Other professional positions included working with portfolio companies of Silicon Valley, and venture capital firm Institutional Venture Partners in California. He was an adjunct professor for the Department of Biomedical Engineering at NJIT, and lecturer at the UMDNJ College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia PA. Other projects included the creation of a dynamic material for use in active prosthetics. He was an entrepreneur in various fields, and so forth...

     A celebration of Jim's life will be held at The Lankenau Funeral Home, 370 Lakehurst Rd. Browns Mills, NJ on Wednesday May 1 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society. Burial will be private.
